Pool safety in Jefferson County is governed by the Alabama Building Code and federal Virginia Graeme Baker (VGB) Pool and Spa Safety Act. Anti-entrapment drain covers are required on all pools. Safety equipment including life rings or shepherd's hooks recommended. No diving in shallow pools. Residential pools must have barrier fencing. Alabama Department of Public Health enforces safety at public pools under Ala. Admin. Code 420-5-14. Electrical bonding and GFCI protection required. Regular maintenance is the owner's responsibility.
