Under the Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act, a pool in St. Johns County must carry at least one safety feature: a 4-foot barrier, an approved safety cover, door and window exit alarms, or self-closing, self-latching doors — Fla. Stat. §515.27.
Fla. Stat. §515.27 gives the pool owner four ways to comply. Option one is a 4-foot barrier meeting §515.29. Option two is an approved safety pool cover meeting ASTM F1346. Option three is exit alarms on all doors and windows with direct pool access, rated at least 85 decibels at 10 feet. Option four is self-closing, self-latching devices on those doors with the release placed no lower than 54 inches. A newer option adds a pool alarm certified to ASTM F2208. St. Johns County verifies the chosen feature before closing the permit.
A pool left without any of the four §515.27 features is a second-degree misdemeanor, though the charge is waived if the owner adds a compliant feature within 45 days and completes a drowning-prevention course.
