Pool access gates must open outward, be self-closing, and self-latching. If the latch release is under 54 inches from grade, it must sit on the pool side at least 3 inches below the top of the gate. Public pools must post daily water-quality results.
Under Prince William County's ISPSC-based requirements, access gates must meet all barrier standards and accommodate a locking device. Pedestrian gates must open outward away from the pool and be self-closing with a self-latching device. Where the release mechanism is less than 54 inches from grade, it must be on the pool side at least 3 inches below the top of the gate, with no opening larger than half an inch within 18 inches of it. Public swimming pools are separately governed by the Virginia Department of Health, which requires operators to post daily water-quality test results (12VAC5-462).
Non-compliant gates fail final inspection. VDH may take enforcement action against public pools that fail to post water-quality results under 12VAC5-462.
