Pedestrian gates in a pool barrier must open outward away from the pool and be self-closing and self-latching. The latch must be high or shielded so a small child cannot reach over the gate and release it.
Under ORSC Appendix G, every pedestrian access gate must swing outward, close by itself, and latch automatically. Where the latch release is less than 54 inches from the bottom of the gate, it must be on the pool side at least 3 inches below the top, with no opening larger than a half-inch within 18 inches of the release. Gates must also meet the same height and opening rules as the surrounding barrier and be equipped to accept a locking device. These rules apply to pools serving one- and two-family homes across the county.
A gate that fails to self-close, self-latch, or swing outward is a barrier violation; the pool cannot pass final inspection or be used until the gate is corrected.
