Under the Indiana Residential Code, Section AG105.2, a pedestrian gate in an Elkhart County pool barrier must open outward, self-close, and self-latch. Public and semi-public pools answer to the county Health Department under 410 IAC 6-2.1.
The Indiana Residential Code Section AG105.2 that the Elkhart County Building Department enforces requires every pedestrian access gate in a pool barrier to open outward away from the pool, close by itself, and latch by itself; where the latch release sits below 54 inches it must be on the pool side. Pool electrical systems must be GFCI-protected and the surrounding metal bonded. Where a dwelling wall forms part of the barrier, doors to the pool need alarms or the pool needs a powered ASTM F1346 cover. A truly public or semi-public pool, such as an HOA, apartment, or campground pool, is separately permitted and inspected by the Elkhart County Health Department under 410 IAC 6-2.1.
A gate that fails to self-close or self-latch is a cited defect that stops the pool from passing inspection. An unprotected house door into the pool area also fails.
