Residential alarm systems are encouraged. For pools and spas that use the dwelling itself as part of the barrier, doors from the house to the pool area must have alarms or self-closing self-latching hardware. Suction entrapment hazards must be addressed through dual drains or anti-vortex covers (Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act federal requirements). Public pools, hot tubs, and water recreation facilities (apartment complexes, HOAs, hotels) are regulated by Seattle-King County Public Health under WAC 246-260 Water Recreation Facilities. Operator training, water quality testing, disinfection, lifeguards (certain facilities), and first aid requirements apply. Public pools must be inspected before opening and at least annually.
