Trash and recycling carts must be placed at the curb on collection day and removed the same evening. Austin City Code Β§15-6-91 requires carts stored out of public view between collections. Unincorporated county has no placement ordinance.
Within Austin city limits, residents must place carts with the arrow facing the street, 2 feet from other carts and fixed objects, and at least 5 feet from parked vehicles. Carts must be removed from the curb by the end of collection day and stored so they are not visible from the public right-of-way. Common violations include leaving carts at the curb between pickups or blocking sidewalks. In unincorporated Travis County, placement is governed by the terms of the private hauler contract, not county ordinance.
Austin: warning, then Class C misdemeanor citation up to $500 for repeat violations. Carts visible from street between collections may trigger code compliance notice.
