Suffolk towns require trash containers placed at the curb or edge of the road, not in the street, with containers removed within 12-24 hours after collection. Containers cannot be stored in front yards on non-collection days in most town codes.
Brookhaven Town Code Section 45-5 requires containers set at the curb no earlier than 6 PM the day before collection and removed by 6 PM of collection day; containers must be stored behind the front building line at other times. Islip Town Code Chapter 47 requires similar side or rear yard storage. Huntington Town Code Chapter 156 mandates containers be covered and screened from the street when not at curb. Containers must not block sidewalks, drainage swales, or fire hydrants. Bear-resistant containers are not required (no bear population) but wildlife (raccoon, deer) proofing is encouraged on the East End.
Containers out too early/late: 50-100 dollars. Storage in front yard: 100-250 dollars. Blocking sidewalk or swale: 100-500 dollars.
