Western unincorporated Nevada County WM subscribers receive one annual transfer-station voucher each January for 2 cubic yards of free bulky-waste disposal. Eastern-county TTSD customers must prepay to have bulky items collected curbside. Bulky items can also be self-hauled to the county's transfer stations.
Bulky and large items in the unincorporated county are handled through transfer stations and, in part, the franchised haulers, under Nevada County Code Article 8. Article 8 requires bulky or non-putrescible wastes unsuitable for storage containers to be stored in a nuisance-free manner and boxed, bundled, tied, or otherwise contained, no longer than 48 inches, no more than 24 inches in diameter, and not over 60 pounds when handled by a private garbage collector (Sec. G-IV 8.2.D.3). For western-county disposal, residents who subscribe to collection services receive one annual transfer-station voucher from Waste Management each January, good for 2 cubic yards of free bulky-waste disposal at the transfer station. The county operates three western transfer stations: McCourtney Road (14741 Wolf Mountain Rd, Grass Valley, open Wednesday-Sunday, 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.), North San Juan, and Washington. Self-haul of bulky items to these stations is available at published disposal rates; the stations accept items such as mattresses and appliances. WM also offers bulky-item curbside pickup on request through a customer account. In the eastern unincorporated county, Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal collects bulky items by appointment: customers call (530) 583-7800 to schedule, and in Nevada County they must prepay for the item to be collected curbside. Certain materials are excluded from ordinary collection and must go to appropriate facilities. Mattresses sold in California carry a state recycling fee that funds free mattress recycling, so mattresses can typically be dropped at participating sites at no additional disposal charge.
Setting bulky waste out loose, oversized, or in a nuisance-prone way violates Sec. G-IV 8.2.D.3. Eastern-county customers who do not prepay TTSD for a scheduled bulky pickup will not have the item collected. Dumping bulky items on roadsides or vacant parcels is unlawful illegal dumping under Article 8.
