Chicago residents can schedule free bulk item pickup through their ward superintendent for items too large for regular collection. Arrangements must be made before setting items at the curb.
The Department of Streets and Sanitation provides bulk pickup for large items such as furniture, appliances, mattresses, and large household items for 1-4 unit residential buildings. Residents must contact their ward superintendent to arrange bulk pickup before placing items at the curb. Items should not be set out until a pickup date is confirmed. Refrigerators and freezers must have doors or lids removed before disposal. Electronics (TVs, computers) should not be placed in regular trash and may require special disposal. Construction debris is not accepted and must be disposed of through a licensed waste hauler. The city also operates household chemicals and computer recycling drop-off events.
Setting out bulk items without arranging pickup may result in illegal dumping citations with fines of $150 to $500. Failure to remove appliance doors carries safety violations.
