Bulk items such as furniture, mattresses, and large appliances require separate pickup arrangement with Oak Lawn's contracted waste hauler, often for an additional fee. Refrigerant-containing appliances require CFC removal. Electronics and hazardous materials cannot be collected curbside.
Oak Lawn's trash service does not automatically collect bulk items at the curb. Residents with furniture, mattresses, large appliances, or similar items must schedule a bulk pickup with the contracted hauler, typically paying a per-item or per-pickup fee. Some programs allow one or more free bulk pickups per year with Village-paid service. Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers require removal of refrigerants (CFCs) by a certified technician before pickup; many haulers offer this service for an additional fee. Mattresses should be sealed in plastic to prevent bed bug issues. Certain items cannot be collected as bulk: electronics (illegal in Illinois landfills under 415 ILCS 150), hazardous chemicals, paint, tires, and construction debris. These require alternative disposal through SWALCO or household hazardous waste events. Yard waste is separate seasonal service. Residents with large projects should rent dumpsters (requiring Village permit if placed in the right-of-way) for construction debris.
Placing bulk items curbside without arranged pickup results in items sitting uncollected and may trigger property maintenance violations. Placing prohibited items (electronics, hazardous waste) in trash is a separate violation.
