Cameron County actively enforces the Texas Litter Abatement Act. Under Health & Safety Code § 365.012, a person commits an offense by disposing of, receiving for disposal, or transporting litter or solid waste to a place that is not an approved solid-waste site. Penalties scale by amount: five pounds/five gallons or less is a Class C misdemeanor (fine up to $500); more than five pounds but under 500 pounds (or 5 to 100 cubic feet) is a Class B misdemeanor; 500 to under 1,000 pounds is a Class A misdemeanor; and 1,000 pounds or 200 cubic feet or more is a state jail felony. Courts must also order community service.
