Mariposa County is a self-haul system: most residents take waste to the Mariposa Landfill or to transfer stations rather than using universal curbside service. Code Chapter 8.36 lets residents haul their own refuse, requires permitted collectors elsewhere, and limits collection hours to 6 a.m.-8 p.m.
There is no countywide mandatory curbside garbage service in Mariposa County. The County operates the Mariposa Landfill, Composting and Recycling Center at 5593 Highway 49 North (open Tuesday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m.) plus transfer stations at Coulterville, Don Pedro, Fish Camp, and Hornitos with limited weekend hours. County Code Section 8.36.080(C) expressly allows 'any person' to remove and dispose of refuse produced on premises they occupy or control, provided they (or their employees) do the hauling and the vehicle meets the code's transport rules. Section 8.36.060(A) makes it unlawful to dispose of garbage except in an authorized container, serviced storage container, or designated disposal area, and Section 8.36.060(B) prohibits burning garbage. Only the Wawona County Service Area 2-W has mandatory collection (Section 8.36.110), reflecting that community's unique location near Yosemite. Anyone hauling for others as a business is a 'collector' who must obtain a permit from the County health department (Section 8.36.050). Where a collector does provide service, Section 8.36.080(B) bars collection before 6:00 a.m. or after 8:00 p.m. unless the Board of Supervisors authorizes otherwise. Fees apply at all county waste facilities under Section 8.36.100.
Improper disposal, unpermitted commercial collection, and garbage burning are misdemeanors under Chapter 1.20; unauthorized dumping at transfer sites is an infraction under Section 8.36.150.
