Mono County does not run garbage collection or mandate curbside service in unincorporated areas. Residents either subscribe to one of two franchise haulers (Mammoth Disposal or D&S Waste Removal) or self-haul municipal solid waste to one of six County transfer stations. D&S collects weekly with set-out by 6 a.m. or the night before. Benton Crossing Landfill closed December 31, 2022; customers now use Pumice Valley.
Solid waste in unincorporated Mono County is handled through a mix of private franchise haulers and self-haul to County facilities, not county-run collection. Per the County's Solid Waste FAQs, residents who contract for municipal solid waste (MSW) curbside pickup do so through one of the County's two franchise haulers, Mammoth Disposal (760-934-2201) and D&S Waste Removal (775-463-3090), and that service continues uninterrupted. Residents who do not subscribe self-haul MSW to one of six County transfer stations: Pumice Valley, Benton, Chalfant, Walker, Bridgeport, or Paradise (plus the Mammoth Disposal Transfer Station). A major operational change took effect when Benton Crossing Landfill closed to the public on December 31, 2022; beginning January 2, 2023, former Benton Crossing customers were directed to the Pumice Valley Landfill and Transfer Station, which expanded to Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For curbside subscribers, D&S Waste Removal collects weekly and requires that carts, cans, and any additional bulk be at the curb or alley, set out the night before or by 6 a.m. on pickup day. Facility hours represent gate open/close times and can change during severe winter storms, road closures, and county-observed holidays, an important consideration in Mono County's snow country. Because the County does not mandate subscription, self-haul remains a fully legal alternative for handling household trash.
No countywide curbside-subscription mandate or related penalty was found for unincorporated areas; self-haul is permitted. Illegal dumping of waste outside permitted facilities, or letting refuse accumulate as a nuisance, is enforceable under the County's nuisance abatement process and state illegal-dumping law. Hauler service issues are contractual with the private company.
