Denver Solid Waste Management (SWM), a division of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI), collects trash, recycling, and compost for single-family and small multi-family (up to 7 units) properties. Effective January 2023, Denver implemented Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) under Council Bill 22-1614: residents pay monthly volume-based fees ($9 for 35-gallon, $13 for 65-gallon, $21 for 95-gallon trash carts as of 2024), while recycling and compost are included at no additional charge. Trash is collected weekly; single-stream recycling and compost (organics) are collected every other week on alternating schedules. Pickup day depends on address β residents can look up schedules at denvergov.org/trash. Carts must be at the curb or alley by 7 AM on collection day. Holiday delays (New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas) push pickup one day. Commercial trash and apartment buildings over 7 units use private haulers regulated under the Waste No More (2022 Ordinance 306) universal recycling and composting requirement.
Missed setout: no pickup until next scheduled day. Overfilled carts: may be skipped or tagged. Repeat cart/schedule violations: $50 to $200 via DOTI enforcement. Commercial non-compliance with Waste No More: escalating fines.
