Unlike many Alabama counties, Madison County runs its own Waste Control Department, providing weekly curbside garbage pickup to households outside Huntsville for $13.50 a month. Alabama Code §22-27-3 makes participation mandatory for everyone generating solid waste.
Madison County is unusual in operating a county collection system rather than leaving trash to private haulers. The Waste Control Department services a county-issued cart once a week, with your collection day set by the first letter of your street name, for a $13.50 monthly household fee and additional carts at $5.00 each. Only carts provided by the county are serviced. Section 22-27-3 of the Solid Wastes Disposal Act backs this up: every household and business generating solid waste must participate in and subscribe to an approved collection system unless granted a certificate of exception. Call 256-532-3718 to start service.
Failing to subscribe and letting garbage accumulate violates the Solid Wastes Disposal Act. Section 22-27-7 makes it a misdemeanor fined $50 to $200, with each day a separate offense.
