The Urban Forestry Plan (2020) and Chapter 43 authorize the City Arborist to designate notable specimens — large diameter, historic, or species champions — on public property. Designated heritage trees on UVM Green, Battery Park, and the Champlain shoreline receive bronze tags, enhanced inspection cycles, and exemption from routine removal absent imminent hazard. Private-side heritage designation is voluntary and does not currently impose removal restrictions. The list is published online and updated annually after the city tree inventory walk.
