Davis protects Landmark Trees, Trees of Significance, City street trees, and Private/Protected trees under Municipal Code Chapter 37; a Tree Removal Request is required and healthy protected trees must be mitigated by replacement or in-lieu payment.
Davis Municipal Code Chapter 37 (Tree Planting, Preservation and Protection) is administered by the Urban Forestry Division. A Landmark Tree is designated by City Council resolution for its species, size, age, form, or historical significance; a Tree of Significance measures 5 inches or more in diameter at breast height. Article 37.03 bars removing, substantially pruning, topping, or encroaching into the Tree Protection Zone of any such tree without an approved permit. The Trees of Significance rules cover all private property except single-family and duplex parcels; Landmark protection applies wherever a designated tree stands. Removing more than three City trees or 25 trunk-inches requires a certified arborist report. Healthy protected trees require on-site replacement or $189 per trunk-inch mitigation.
Damaging or illegally removing a Landmark Tree, Tree of Significance, or City tree violates Chapter 37 and can result in penalties plus required mitigation valued at the $189-per-trunk-inch in-lieu rate or full replacement. Emergency removals require notice to the Director.
