Oklahoma City requires permits for street trees and trees over 8-inch DBH in commercial PUDs. Private residential trees generally unregulated. Edmond has stricter private rules.
Oklahoma City Municipal Code §38-15 and §59-10900 require permits before removing any street tree, tree in public right-of-way, or tree over 8-inch DBH (diameter at breast height, 4.5 feet above grade) within a commercial PUD or urban-design district. Residential private property trees are generally unregulated unless (1) in a designated Heritage district, (2) subject to HOA CC&Rs, or (3) removed during development requiring a tree survey. Edmond Code §22-43 requires permits to remove private trees over 12-inch DBH in established neighborhoods. Midwest City has no private-tree ordinance. Unincorporated Oklahoma County has no tree-removal regulation. Post oaks, pecans, American elms, and bur oaks native to central Oklahoma are commonly subject to PUD protection. Hazardous, dead, or diseased trees qualify for expedited permits — call the OKC Forestry Division (405-297-1441). Utility right-of-way clearance work by OG&E, OEC, or ONG does not require permits.
Unauthorized street tree removal: $500 to $5,000 per tree (OKC §38-17). PUD violations: $1,000 to $10,000 + replacement at 2:1 or 3:1 ratio.
