Miami mandates tree replacement when trees are removed for development or other purposes. The city requires replacement ratios based on tree size and species, with higher ratios for protected and heritage species. Payment into the city's tree trust fund is an alternative.
When trees are removed with a permit, replacement is required at minimum 1:1 ratio for standard trees and 2:1 or higher for protected species. Heritage trees may require 3:1 replacement. Replacement trees must meet minimum size requirements (typically 10-12 foot height, 2-3 inch caliper at planting). If on-site planting is not feasible, the property owner may pay into the city's tree trust fund for off-site planting. The Urban Forestry Division determines appropriate species and approves planting plans. Replacement trees must be maintained for a minimum period.
Failure to plant required replacement trees triggers enforcement action, additional fines, and potential liens. Dead replacement trees must be replaced within the maintenance period.
