The Great Lakes Water Authority operates one of the largest single-site wastewater plants in North America, treating Detroit-area sewage before discharging to the Detroit River under federal NPDES permits. Industrial users that need process water generally take additional treatment steps on site. Greywater reuse on residential properties is governed by the Michigan Plumbing Code and is rarely permitted for outdoor irrigation. Construction-site dust-control trucks and street sweepers occasionally use hydrant water, never reclaimed effluent.
