Under AMC Chapter 18.42, carports and covered parking structures in residential zones must comply with setback and height requirements for accessory structures. Non-habitable accessory structures including carports cannot exceed one story or 16 feet in height per AMC 18.04.070. Carport installation in areas previously designated for open surface resident parking requires Planning Director review and approval. Garages and carports must be used for parking operable vehicles and may not be used solely for storage. Building permits are required for carport construction. Carports must maintain required setbacks from property lines consistent with the underlying zone standards.
