Carports in Santa Ana are regulated as accessory structures under SAMC Chapter 41 (Zoning). Attached carports must maintain the same yard setbacks as the main building per Section 41-607. A building permit is required for carport construction.
Under SAMC Section 41-607, an attached accessory garage, carport, or other accessory building including an open breezeway, patio cover, or trellis must maintain the same yards as required for the main building except as provided in subsection 41-606(e). Detached carports located in rear yards may qualify for reduced setbacks. All carport construction requires a building permit from the Planning and Building Agency. Structures must comply with California Building Code wind and structural load requirements. Carports count toward the maximum lot coverage for the applicable zoning district.
Unpermitted carport construction is subject to code enforcement action under SAMC. Violations may result in stop-work orders, fines, required removal, or retroactive permitting with applicable fees.
