Santa Ana prohibits abandonment of motor vehicles on public streets and private property. Vehicles parked beyond the 72-hour limit on public streets are subject to towing under SAMC Sec. 36-136. The Parking Enforcement Unit actively removes abandoned vehicles.
Under SAMC Sec. 36-136, vehicles parked on public streets or alleys for more than 72 consecutive hours are considered in violation and subject to removal by the Chief of Police. The city also prohibits abandonment of vehicles on private property per SAMC Chapter 10, Article XI (Seizure and Impounding of Vehicles). California Vehicle Code Sec. 22651(k) provides statewide authority for 72-hour enforcement. The Parking Enforcement Unit is responsible for marking, tracking, and removing abandoned vehicles. To report an abandoned vehicle, call Parking Control at (714) 245-8225. Impound fees are $197 for non-driver's license related impounds. Vehicle owners may request a post-storage hearing in writing or in person at the Santa Ana Police Department, Monday-Friday 9 AM to 11 AM.
