Carson, CA Accessory Structures: Carport Rules (2026)

Carports — open-sided roofed structures providing off-street parking — are regulated by Carson Zoning Code (CMC Article IX, Ch. 1) for setback, height, and design standards, and by Carson Building Code (adopting 2022 Title 24 CCR) for permit and structural requirements. Under the California Residential Code §R105.2 (adopted by Carson), open carports up to 200 sq ft are permit-exempt from the building permit, but a zoning clearance is still required to verify they meet front-yard setback, side-yard setback, and lot-coverage limits in the underlying zone. Carports converted to enclosed garages or used as living/storage space lose their permit exemption and must obtain a full building permit. Because Carson is densely industrial-residential, carports in front-yard setbacks of residential zones are typically restricted to maintain visual/streetscape standards. CALGreen Title 24 Part 11 EV-ready parking requirements apply to new residential carports built with new dwellings or significant remodels.
