Carson, CA Accessory Structures: Shed Rules (2026)

Carson regulates detached accessory structures (storage sheds, garden buildings, workshops) through its Zoning Code (CMC Article IX, Ch. 1) on the eCode360 portal, which is current through January 6, 2026. The Building Code chapter of the CMC adopts the 2022 California Building Standards Code (Title 24 CCR) by reference. Per the statewide California Residential Code §R105.2 (adopted by Carson), one-story detached accessory structures used as tool/storage sheds with a floor area of 120 sq ft or less are exempt from a building permit — but they still must comply with zoning setbacks, height limits, and lot-coverage rules in the Carson Zoning Code. Sheds over 120 sq ft require a building permit through the Carson Building & Safety division (701 E Carson St). Carson also enforces a state-mandated Cal Fire Code Title 24 Part 9 (adopted via CMC Building Code) for fire-rated separations near property lines. Because Carson is a contract city, LACoFD enforces brush-clearance rules where applicable, though most of Carson is outside the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone.
