Carson, CA Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Cal. Veh. Code §22500(e) bars stopping in front of any public or private driveway (passenger loading/unloading and brief mail pickup excepted). §22500(f) bars parking on a sidewalk, and §22500(h) bars double-parking, both of which commonly arise where private driveways are blocked. Section 22651(d) authorizes a peace officer or parking enforcement officer to remove a vehicle blocking a driveway. Carson's Public Safety Parking Enforcement page expressly lists keeping 'sidewalks, driveways, and ADA access areas clear' as a duty, and citations are issued accordingly. Within Carson, driveway aprons connecting private property to the public street are constructed under city encroachment/standards; the residential driveway itself is private property — owners control who parks on it, and a vehicle parked on a private driveway without consent can be removed under Cal. Veh. Code §22658 (private property tow after signage and notice). Note: blocking your own driveway from the street is still a Vehicle Code violation because the prohibition protects the public right-of-way and access to the driveway, not the property owner's preference.
