A carport is treated as an accessory structure, so the county's accessory-structure setbacks apply: it cannot sit in a required front or side yard, must stay five feet from interior lot lines, and any accessory structure over 700 square feet must be inside the building envelope.
The Cumberland County Zoning Ordinance does not list separate carport standards; a carport is an accessory building, so Section 1002.E (Accessory Structures) governs. That means no placement in a required front or side yard, at least 20 feet from a side-street line, at least five feet from interior lot lines and other buildings, and no closer to a street than the principal-structure setback. Larger accessory structures over 700 square feet must sit inside the building envelope. A zoning permit is required before construction. Inside Fayetteville, Hope Mills, or Spring Lake, the town's UDO and inspections office apply instead of the county ordinance.
Erecting a carport in a required yard or without a zoning permit violates the ordinance; the county may deny the permit, require relocation or removal, and impose Chapter 160D penalties.
