Freehold, NJ Accessory Structures: Carport Rules (2026)

Freehold Borough does not publish a stand-alone 'carport' subsection. Carports are treated as accessory structures under Title 18 (Zoning) of the Borough Code, which is published as a downloadable PDF rather than on Ecode360. Per the Zoning Department, applications are required for all new construction, additions, and alterations including driveways, walkways, patios, and new, altered, or relocated accessory structures such as sheds, garages, decks, pools, signs and fences. Setback, lot-coverage and height rules are set by the Schedule of Area, Yard and Building Requirements in Title 18 and depend on the underlying zone (R-7.5, R-10, R-15, B-1, etc.). A zoning permit from Zoning Officer Matthew Young is required first, followed by a New Jersey Uniform Construction Code permit (N.J.A.C. 5:23) issued by the Borough Construction Office covering structural, foundation and any electrical work. Properties within the Freehold Borough Historic District may also require Historic Preservation Commission review.
