Carports are accessory structures regulated by Asbury Park Land Development Regulations Chapter 30. Detached accessory structures must sit in a side or rear yard, at least 5 feet from any side line, and in R1/R2 zones at least 5 feet from the side and 3 feet from the rear lot line. A zoning permit and NJ UCC construction permit are required.
Asbury Park does not have a stand-alone 'carport' subsection; carports are treated as accessory structures under Chapter 30 (Land Development Regulations), Article VI Zoning. Detached accessory structures must be placed in a side or rear yard and may not be constructed closer than 5 feet to any side property line. In the R1 (Single-Family Residential) and R2 zones the rear-yard setback for an accessory structure is 3 feet from the rear lot line and 5 feet from the side lot line. In multifamily and nonresidential zones, accessory structures must meet the principal building setbacks unless specifically exempted. Maximum accessory building height is 15 feet. A zoning permit from the Planning & Redevelopment Department is required for all driveways, fences and accessory structures, plus a New Jersey Uniform Construction Code (UCC) permit under N.J.A.C. 5:23 issued by the Construction Office for the structural, foundation and any electrical work. Confirm the front-yard prohibition, exact dimensional limits for your zone (R1, R2, R3, etc.) and whether your block falls in a flood zone (FEMA / NJ Flood Hazard Area Control Act, N.J.A.C. 7:13) with the Planning office before building.
Building without a zoning permit or UCC construction permit can result in stop-work orders, daily fines under the UCC enforcement schedule, and a requirement to remove or relocate the structure to meet setbacks.
