Building an ADU requires construction documents and a zoning permit from the city. The city explicitly prohibits short-term rental of ADUs. In flood hazard areas, ADUs as Group U accessory structures must meet Chapter 24 elevation requirements including elevation to the Local Design Flood Elevation. The ADU must comply with NJ UCC building code requirements for habitable spaces including egress, fire safety, and utilities.
