Maple Grove's code does not single out carports with a separate standard; a roofed carport is treated as an accessory structure subject to the general accessory-building rules: 15-foot height limit, 5-foot setback from lot lines, no placement in a front or side yard, and the district accessory-area caps. New homes must still have an enclosed two-car garage.
The City of Maple Grove's published accessory-building guidance (the Residential Garages/Sheds handout and Chapter 36) regulates attached and detached garages and detached sheds as accessory buildings but does not contain a separate carport standard. A permanent roofed carport is generally treated as an accessory structure and so is subject to the same controls: detached accessory buildings may not exceed 15 feet in height, must be set back at least 5 feet from all lot lines (and out of any utility easement), and may not be located in a required front or side yard. Importantly, Maple Grove requires new single-family homes to have a garage with capacity for at least two cars, not less than 20 feet by 24 feet, so a carport does not substitute for that required enclosed garage. Because carports are not separately defined, placement, size and whether a permit is required should be confirmed with the Community & Economic Development Department (763-494-6040) and the Building Department (763-494-6060). Open temporary metal car shelters may face additional limits as outdoor storage; verify before installing.
Installing a carport in a front or side yard, within 5 feet of a lot line, over 15 feet tall, or without a required permit can lead to a zoning violation, a correction order, and removal of the structure.
