A carport is a detached (or attached) accessory structure under the CZO. A detached carport in a required yard is limited to 14 feet in height and must sit at least 3 feet from any lot line, and it counts toward the 40% rear-yard accessory-structure coverage cap.
New Orleans regulates carports through CZO Article 21.6 like any other accessory structure, because the parish is the city. A detached carport within a required yard may not exceed 14 feet in height; one in the buildable area follows the district's principal-building height. It must be at least 3 feet from any lot line, and combined detached accessory structures in the required rear yard may cover no more than 40% of that yard. Attached carports follow the principal building's setback and height limits. A building permit is generally required, and front-yard/streetscape carports face additional district and historic-district restrictions.
Carports exceeding height, setback, or coverage limits or built without a permit may be cited and ordered removed or modified by Safety and Permits.
