Selma, CA Accessory Structures: Carport Rules (2026)

The City of Selma regulates carport construction under the 2022 California Building Code and its zoning ordinance. A building permit is required for all new carport construction. Carports must comply with the setback requirements of the applicable zoning district, typically maintaining minimum side and rear yard setbacks. In residential zones, carports are generally permitted as accessory structures in the rear or side yard. Front yard carports may be subject to additional design review or restrictions depending on the zoning district. Carports must be included in the calculation of total lot coverage and may not cause the property to exceed the maximum allowed coverage percentage. Open carports (those with at least two open sides) may have reduced setback requirements compared to fully enclosed garages in certain zoning districts.
