Denver's 30-year pit bull ban was lifted in 2021. Pit bulls now require a Breed-Restricted Permit ($30/year) plus assessment. Permit requires spay/neuter, microchip, and rabies vaccination.
Denver's pit bull ban, originally enacted in 1989, was repealed by voters in November 2020 and took effect January 1, 2021. Under the replacement ordinance (DRMC Β§8-67), pit bulls β defined as dogs displaying a majority of traits of American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, or Staffordshire Bull Terrier β may be kept in Denver with a Breed-Restricted Permit. Requirements include an in-person assessment by Denver Animal Protection ($25 fee), proof of spay/neuter, microchip, current rabies vaccination, standard Denver dog license, and two emergency contacts. The $30 annual permit must be renewed. Denver replaced breed-specific legislation with a breed-neutral dangerous dog ordinance.
Keeping a pit bull without a Breed-Restricted Permit is unlawful. Fines and impoundment apply.
