Denver, CO Animal Ordinances: Breed Restrictions (2026)

Denver Revised Municipal Code § 8-67 makes it unlawful to own or keep a pit bull in the city without a breed-restricted permit from Denver Animal Protection. Applicants must supply owner and emergency contacts, a description and photo, an annual fee, proof of microchip implantation, and current rabies vaccination. Permitted owners may keep no more than two pit bulls per household, must report an escape within eight hours and a bite or attack within eight hours, and must let animal protection officers inspect the animal and premises. After 36 consecutive months without a chapter 8 violation, the permit requirement can be lifted and the dog re-licensed as a standard pet under section 8-46.
