Lincoln requires a Large Animal Permit under LMC 6.04.030 for horses, cattle, goats, and sheep. Lot size rules apply. Swine are banned citywide under LMC 6.04.290.
LMC 6.04.030 establishes permit requirements for keeping large animals (horses, cattle, goats, sheep, llamas, and similar livestock) within Lincoln city limits. Permits are issued by Animal Control based on property size, with minimum acreage requirements that vary by animal type and number. Properties of 1 acre or less face specific restrictions on the number and type of large animals allowed. Adequate shelter, fencing, and sanitary conditions are required for all permitted animals. LMC 6.04.290 specifically prohibits keeping swine (pigs and hogs) anywhere within the city. LMC 6.04.120 requires all animals to be confined to the owner's property and prohibits running at large. Large animals must not create unsanitary conditions or nuisances for neighboring properties. Lincoln's zoning regulations may further restrict livestock in certain residential districts. Contact Animal Control at (402) 441-7900 for permit applications.
