Lincoln allows urban beekeeping under Lincoln Municipal Code Chapter 6.16 (Apiaries). Hives must sit at least 50 feet from any neighboring dwelling and 15 feet from any lot line, sidewalk, alley, or public way, capped at one hive per 1,500 square feet of lot.
LMC 6.16.010 prohibits any hive within 50 feet of a dwelling other than the owner's, or within 15 feet of a lot line, sidewalk, alley, or public way. The 15-foot lot-line setback may be reduced if a barrier at least 6 feet high stands between the hive and the boundary to redirect bee flight. LMC 6.16.020 caps density at one hive per 1,500 square feet of lot. LMC 6.16.030 requires beekeepers to minimize swarming, provide an on-site water source, supply enough hives for the colony, and prevent nuisance. Chapter 6.16 was adopted by Ordinance 15518 on April 9, 1990.
Under LMC 6.16.040, Animal Control or police issue a citation on observing a violation. LMC 6.16.050 sets fines of $25-$500 for a first offense, $50+ for a second, and $100+ thereafter. Each day is a separate offense.
