Curb colors and no-parking markings are set only by the City; residents may not paint curbs or install their own markings to reserve parking, and unauthorized traffic markings are prohibited under Lincoln's traffic-control rules.
Lancaster County and Lincoln do not authorize private curb painting to claim on-street parking. Curb markings, colored zones, and no-parking designations are official traffic-control devices placed by the Director of Transportation and Utilities. Lincoln Municipal Code Title 10 (including Chapter 10.12 on traffic-control devices) prohibits unauthorized signs, signals, or markings that imitate or interfere with official devices, so a homeowner cannot paint a curb yellow or stencil a no-parking legend to reserve a space. On-street spaces in front of a residence are public. To request a marked zone, contact the City; in the unincorporated county, road markings are handled by the County Engineer.
Placing unauthorized curb paint or markings is a Title 10 violation; the City may remove the markings and cite the responsible party.
