Oak Lawn prohibits keeping livestock such as cattle, horses, pigs, goats, sheep, and farm poultry in all residential and most commercial zoning districts. The village's suburban character does not accommodate livestock under its zoning code.
Oak Lawn Village Code prohibits keeping livestock, defined to include cattle, horses, ponies, hogs, goats, sheep, and similar farm animals, on any residential or most commercial property. As a dense suburban village in Cook County with no agricultural zoning, Oak Lawn does not accommodate livestock. Mini-pigs, potbelly pigs, pygmy goats, and similar miniature livestock marketed as pets are also prohibited under the ordinance's general farm animal language. Residents seeking to keep such animals must relocate to unincorporated agricultural areas or municipalities that allow them. Certified service animals and traditional household pets (dogs, cats, small caged mammals, fish, and non-venomous reptiles) are permitted subject to other rules. Enforcement is handled by Code Enforcement in coordination with Cook County Animal Control.
Keeping prohibited livestock results in immediate abatement orders. Daily fines of $100 to $500 accrue until animals are removed. Cook County Animal Control may seize animals kept in violation of local zoning. Property may be subject to additional cleanup orders for manure and related conditions.
