Arlington Heights prohibits keeping livestock and farm animals on residential property. The Village's zoning and animal control ordinances restrict animals such as horses, cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs from residential districts. Arlington Heights is a fully developed suburban community and does not have agricultural zoning districts within Village limits.
Arlington Heights municipal code prohibits the keeping of livestock and farm animals in residential zoning districts. This includes horses, cattle, goats, sheep, pigs (including potbelly pigs and miniature pigs), and other traditional farm animals. The Village is a densely developed suburb with no agricultural zoning, and residential lots are not sized for livestock keeping. Chickens may be addressed separately under the Village's poultry provisions but traditional livestock is broadly prohibited. The restriction applies to all residential zones within the Village. No special use permits or variances are available for livestock in residential areas. 4-H and similar educational programs involving livestock must house animals at appropriate off-site facilities, not on residential property. The prohibition is based on concerns about noise, odor, waste management, and incompatibility with suburban residential density.
Keeping livestock on residential property may result in immediate notice of violation and orders to remove the animals. Fines apply for each day the violation continues. The Village may involve Cook County Animal Control for enforcement. Contact Code Enforcement at (847) 368-5200.
