Oak Park prohibits keeping traditional livestock in residential zoning districts. Goats, sheep, cattle, horses, pigs, and other farm animals are not allowed on residential property. The only permitted poultry is hens under the Village's backyard chicken permit program.
The Village of Oak Park prohibits keeping traditional livestock on residential property under its zoning ordinance. Animals classified as livestock β including goats, sheep, cattle, horses, donkeys, pigs, and similar farm animals β may not be kept, bred, or housed in any residential zoning district. The prohibition applies regardless of lot size within residential zones. The Village's backyard chicken program is the only exception allowing any poultry on residential property, limited to hens under a permit. Miniature or dwarf breeds of livestock (such as pygmy goats or miniature horses) are also prohibited in residential areas. The keeping of livestock is limited to properties zoned for agricultural use, of which there are essentially none within Oak Park's boundaries. Temporary exceptions may be made for educational or therapeutic purposes at licensed institutional facilities with Village approval. Residents who wish to keep animals beyond typical domestic pets should contact the Building Department at (708) 358-5440 to verify what is permitted on their property.
Keeping livestock in residential zones results in immediate code violation notices requiring removal of the animals. Fines are assessed for each day of non-compliance. The Village may involve Animal Control and the Illinois Department of Agriculture for enforcement.
