Oak Park requires dogs to be on a leash at all times when off the owner's property. Leashes must be no longer than 6 feet. Dog owners must immediately clean up after their pets. The Village operates designated off-leash dog areas in certain parks.
The Village of Oak Park requires all dogs to be restrained on a leash not exceeding 6 feet in length whenever the dog is off the owner's private property, including on sidewalks, streets, parks, and other public areas. Dogs must be under the physical control of a person capable of restraining the animal. Retractable leashes are permitted but must be locked at 6 feet or less when in public areas. Dog owners are required to immediately pick up and properly dispose of their dog's waste on any public or private property that is not their own. The Village provides waste bag stations in some parks and public areas. Oak Park has designated off-leash areas in certain parks where dogs may exercise without a leash during posted hours, provided they are under voice control and the owner remains in the designated area. All dogs in Oak Park must be licensed with the Village and have current rabies vaccinations. The Oak Park Animal Care League and Village Animal Control handle stray and loose dog complaints.
Leash law violations carry fines starting at $50. Failure to clean up dog waste may result in fines of $75 or more. Dogs running at large may be impounded, with the owner responsible for impound fees. Repeat offenders face escalating fines.
