Oak Park, IL Animal Ordinances: Beekeeping (2026)

The Village of Oak Park allows residential beekeeping subject to regulations designed to protect neighbors and public safety. Beekeepers must register their hives with the Illinois Department of Agriculture under the Illinois Bees and Apiaries Act (510 ILCS 20). The Village allows a limited number of hives per residential property based on lot size, typically 2 hives on standard residential lots. Hives must be placed in rear yards and maintained at specified setback distances from property lines, public sidewalks, and neighboring dwellings. A flyway barrier (fence, hedge, or screen) at least 6 feet tall is required along property lines near hive entrances to force bees to fly upward and over neighboring areas. Beekeepers must maintain an adequate water source on their property to prevent bees from congregating at neighbor swimming pools or water features. Aggressive bee colonies must be re-queened promptly. The Village may require removal of hives that generate sustained complaints or demonstrate aggressive behavior.
