Arlington Heights discourages feeding wildlife and may enforce nuisance provisions when feeding attracts pest animals. The Village has addressed coyote management and deer populations as suburban wildlife concerns. Feeding deer is discouraged by the Village and Illinois DNR. Intentionally feeding wildlife that creates a nuisance can result in code enforcement action under property maintenance and public nuisance ordinances.
Arlington Heights does not have a standalone wildlife feeding prohibition but addresses the issue through nuisance and property maintenance ordinances. Feeding wildlife such as deer, coyotes, raccoons, and feral cats can attract pest animals and create public health and safety concerns. The Village has an active coyote management awareness program and advises residents against leaving food outdoors that attracts coyotes. Deer are present in some Arlington Heights neighborhoods, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources discourages feeding deer as it concentrates populations and spreads disease. Bird feeders are generally permitted but should be maintained to avoid attracting rodents; feeders should be kept clean and spilled seed removed regularly. Feral cat feeding may be permitted through managed trap-neuter-return programs but uncontrolled feeding that creates a nuisance can lead to enforcement. Residents should secure trash containers, remove fallen fruit, and avoid leaving pet food outdoors. The Village works with Cook County and Illinois DNR on wildlife management issues.
Intentionally feeding wildlife that creates a documented nuisance may result in a notice of violation under the Village's nuisance ordinance. Failure to correct the condition after notice can result in fines. Accumulation of wildlife attractants that creates unsanitary conditions may trigger property maintenance violations.
