Skokie prohibits intentional feeding of wildlife including deer, raccoons, coyotes, squirrels, and geese on public and private property. Bird feeders are permitted but must not attract rodents or create nuisance conditions.
Under Skokie's property maintenance and animal codes, intentionally feeding wild animals is prohibited when it creates a public nuisance or attracts unwanted wildlife into residential areas. This includes setting out food for deer, raccoons, coyotes, opossums, skunks, feral cats in unmanaged colonies, and Canada geese. Bird feeding using approved feeders (seed, suet, hummingbird) is permitted but owners must prevent seed spillage from attracting rats and other rodents. Pet food must not be left outdoors overnight. Feeding waterfowl (ducks, geese) in public parks or retention ponds is specifically prohibited as it damages water quality and habituates birds. Illinois DNR handles nuisance coyote and deer complaints. Contact Skokie Code Enforcement at (847) 933-8235.
Wildlife feeding citations typically result in warnings for first offenses and fines of $50 to $250 for repeat violations. Property owners may also face property maintenance citations if feeding attracts rats or other pests. Continued violations can accrue daily fines.
