Home cultivation of cannabis for personal recreational use is illegal in Washington State. Only licensed medical patients or providers may grow plants under specific state-authorized conditions.
Washington State Initiative 502 legalized recreational cannabis for adults 21 and over in 2012, but unlike most other legalization states Washington did not authorize home cultivation for recreational use. Growing cannabis at home for personal recreational consumption remains a criminal offense under RCW 69.50. Only qualifying medical marijuana patients registered in the Washington State Medical Marijuana Authorization Database under RCW 69.51A may grow up to 6 plants for personal medical use at their residence, with up to 15 plants allowed for patients with recognized higher needs certified by an authorizing provider. Designated providers may grow for one registered patient. Medical grows must be out of public view, kept secure from minors, and not create odor or visibility nuisance to neighbors. Renton does not add further restrictions beyond state law but enforces the state prohibition. Possession of up to 1 ounce of usable cannabis for adults 21 and over is legal statewide. Renton residents who wish to cultivate should consider the legal risks and pursue medical authorization through a licensed practitioner if needed. State lawmakers have periodically considered bills to legalize limited home grow, but none have passed as of recent legislative sessions.
