Industrial noise in Renton including Boeing and Cedar River industry is limited to 70 dBA industrial, 60 dBA at residential day, 50 dBA at residential night per WAC 173-60 and RMC 8-7.
Renton Municipal Code Chapter 8-7 adopts WAC 173-60 environmental noise limits, which are based on the Environmental Designation for Noise Abatement (EDNA) of the receiving property. When industrial noise is received at another industrial property, the limit is 70 dBA; at a commercial property it is 65 dBA; and at a residential property it is 60 dBA during the day and 50 dBA at night. The Boeing 737 plant, aerospace suppliers, and industrial operations along the Cedar River corridor must keep noise within these receiving-property limits. Short-duration sound is allowed to exceed the limit by 5 dBA for 15 minutes per hour, 10 dBA for 5 minutes per hour, and 15 dBA for 1.5 minutes per hour. Complaints about industrial noise are investigated by Renton Code Enforcement, often with sound measurements taken at the complainant's property line.
