Renton adopts WAC 173-60 decibel limits via RMC 8-7: residential 55 dBA day and 45 dBA night, commercial 57/52 dBA, industrial 60 dBA, measured at the receiving property line.
Renton Municipal Code Chapter 8-7 incorporates the Washington State noise standards in WAC 173-60 as the local decibel framework. Limits are set by the Environmental Designation for Noise Abatement (EDNA) of both the source and receiving property. When sound is received at a Class A (residential) property, the daytime limit is 55 dBA and the nighttime limit drops to 45 dBA between 10 PM and 7 AM on weekdays (until 9 AM on weekends). Class B (commercial) receiving property limits are 57 dBA day and 52 dBA night. Class C (industrial) limits are 60 dBA around the clock. Measurements are taken at the property line of the receiving property using an ANSI-standard Type 2 sound level meter on slow response. Impulsive sounds such as pile driving may be measured differently. Short excursions of 5, 10, or 15 dBA above the limit are allowed for limited minutes per hour.
