Renton, WA Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

RMC 8-7-1 adopts by reference Washington Administrative Code sections 173-62-020, 173-62-030 and 173-62-040, which set the state's decibel limits and testing procedures for motor vehicle exhaust and engine noise; Renton enforces these WAC standards directly rather than writing its own numeric table. Beyond that adopted standard, RMC 8-7-3 separately makes it unlawful to knowingly cause unreasonable noise that disturbs another, and lists vehicle-specific nuisances: frequent or continuous horn or siren sounding except as a danger warning (8-7-3B), and frequent or continuous noise from starting, operating, repairing, rebuilding or testing any motor vehicle, motorcycle, off-highway vehicle or internal combustion engine within a rural or residential district that disturbs the peace of neighboring property owners (8-7-3C).

Portable generators run during a natural disaster or power outage are exempted from the engine-noise nuisance rule. Subsection H separately targets motor vehicle audio systems: a car stereo, tape player or CD player run loud enough to interfere with conversation or to cause vibrations felt 75 feet or more from the vehicle is a public disturbance violation on its own, independent of the WAC decibel standard. Violations under Chapter 8-7 are civil infractions enforced under RMC Title 1-10, and the City can also seek a King County Superior Court injunction against a repeat violator in addition to citing the civil penalty.
